Warning signs
- ✓Any request for money. Application fees, "training deposits", medical fees, uniform fees, courier charges. All red flags.
- ✓An offer without a real interview. Legitimate employers assess before they hire.
- ✓Free email domains. Offers from gmail, yahoo or lookalike domains rather than the company domain.
- ✓Pressure and urgency. "Pay today or lose the slot" is a tactic, not a process.
- ✓Vague role, generous salary. If the duties are unclear but the pay is extraordinary, it is bait.
- ✓Requests for BVN, full bank details or card OTPs. Never required to receive an offer.
How to verify
1. Search the company name plus "reviews" and "scam" together. 2. Check the domain of every email address against the official website. 3. Call the company's published switchboard number — not the one in the email. 4. Confirm the recruiter exists on the company's own site or LinkedIn. 5. Ask for the offer on company letterhead with a named signatory and confirm it by phone.
If you have been targeted
Stop all communication and payments, keep screenshots and transaction records, report to your bank immediately if money moved, and report to the police and the affected company so they can warn others.
