What a DPCO licence actually is
A Data Protection Compliance Organisation is an entity the NDPC has specifically authorised to perform compliance functions on behalf of, or in assessment of, other organisations — audits, training and certification among them. It's a distinct, formal status, not a self-declared credential. Avant Tech Nigeria holds this licence, which is what allows us to certify other organisations' data protection compliance, not only our own.
Why the distinction matters when you're the one being audited
If the NDPC ever reviews your organisation's data protection posture, one of the questions is where your staff training came from. Training delivered by a licensed DPCO carries weight in that conversation that a generic compliance workshop, however well-produced, doesn't. It's evidence your organisation sought training from a source the regulator itself recognises as authoritative — not just a source that claims expertise.
What being audit-authorised changes about how training gets built
Because a DPCO's own standing depends on getting this right, training built by one tends to be built differently: mapped explicitly to what an NDPC audit actually checks, updated as guidance shifts rather than left static, and assessed rather than merely attended. An organisation without audit authority is teaching from the outside; one with it is teaching from inside the compliance process it's certifying you against.
Where this applies beyond a single training session
The same authority extends to certifying compliance programmes, not just running individual courses — relevant if you need documented evidence of an ongoing compliance capability, not a one-time certificate of attendance. For financial institutions, insurers and other NDPC-regulated entities carrying constant data protection exposure, that ongoing evidence is usually what's actually being asked for, not a single completed session from two years ago.
