What a credit check actually reviews
A credit check draws on licensed credit-bureau data to review credit history, payment patterns, debt levels and loan defaults. It is a "soft" check: in Nigeria, an employment credit check does not affect the candidate's own credit score or borrowing ability, because it is a different query type from a lender's credit application.
Which roles justify one
Credit checks are most relevant for finance, treasury, procurement, cash-handling and other roles where financial trust is central to the job. Running a credit check on every hire regardless of role adds cost and turnaround time without a clear connection to the position's actual risk.
Consent and data protection
Employers should obtain written consent before requesting a credit check and should be able to explain the check's relevance to the role, consistent with Nigeria Data Protection Act requirements around lawful basis and data minimisation. Candidates should be told a credit check is part of the process before it runs, not after.
Turnaround expectations
Because a credit check draws on external bureau data, a realistic expectation is a report within a few business days rather than an instant result. Employers running high-volume hiring should plan credit checks alongside — not after — other source-dependent checks like employment and education verification.
Pair with the right complementary checks
For roles carrying both financial and reputational risk, a credit check is often combined with employment and guarantor verification or a broader KYC verification package rather than run in isolation.
Questions to ask a provider
- ✓Is the credit data sourced from a licensed bureau, and is that stated in the report?
- ✓Is written consent captured before the check runs?
- ✓Does the employer receive a clear report, or just a pass/fail score?
- ✓Can the check be bundled with other pre-employment screening in one request?
- ✓What is the realistic turnaround for this check specifically?
