Who needs it
Any organisation onboarding people it hasn't met in person: remote hires, gig and marketplace workers, loan applicants, new account holders, and any regulated flow where a downstream decision depends on the applicant being real.
What "identity verification" actually confirms
A proper identity check validates a National Identification Number (NIN) or Bank Verification Number (BVN) against the issuing database, cross-checks the name and date of birth for consistency, and — where biometric capture is available — compares a live photo against the record on file. Confirming that a NIN "exists" is not the same as confirming it belongs to the person presenting it.
Why NIN or BVN alone isn't enough
NIN and BVN checks confirm a number is valid and matches the claimed identity's demographics. They do not, by themselves, catch a stolen or borrowed identity used by someone else, or a synthetic identity assembled from real fragments. That's why identity verification is usually paired with a live biometric or photographic comparison, and — for higher-risk decisions — with a second check such as address or employment verification.
Common failure modes
- ✓Recycled or spoofed documents — a real ID number attached to someone else's face.
- ✓Demographic mismatch — the name, date of birth or gender on the ID doesn't match what the applicant provided elsewhere in the application.
- ✓Duplicate applicants — the same identity number showing up across multiple accounts or applications in your own pipeline, often a sign of fraud rings rather than a single bad actor.
Turnaround
Digital NIN and BVN validation is typically instant to same-day. International identity verification, where a hire or applicant holds a foreign passport, is quoted by jurisdiction and takes longer.
Questions to ask before you trust a "verified" result
- ✓Was the number checked against the issuing database, or only validated as correctly formatted?
- ✓Is there a biometric or photo comparison, or only a demographic match?
- ✓How does the process flag duplicate identities already in your system?
- ✓What happens when a check returns a partial or inconclusive match — is that surfaced to you, or silently passed?
