NDPC Compliance Audit in Nigeria: What to Prepare

Organisations classified by the NDPC as major data controllers, major data processors, or otherwise brought into scope of the compliance audit regime are expected to be able to evidence their data protection practices — not simply state them. If you are unsure of your organisation's classification, that determination is the first thing to establish before scoping an audit-preparation exercise.

Audit-readiness work typically covers:

• ✓a current record of processing activities (ROPA) that reflects what the organisation actually does with personal data, not a template filled in once and forgotten;
• ✓documented lawful basis for processing, consent records where applicable, and data subject rights handling;
• ✓breach detection, escalation and notification procedures, with evidence they have actually been exercised or tested;
• ✓vendor and processor agreements with the data-protection terms an audit will look for;
• ✓a Data Protection Officer function that can demonstrate independence and is actually resourced to do the job, not a title assigned to someone already running another department;
• ✓staff training records showing who was trained, on what, and when — the same completion evidence a regulator asks for after any incident.

An NDPC audit doesn't only examine documents — it tests whether the people handling personal data day to day understand what they're supposed to do.
